Dear Natalie Kate, You smell like your letters, stationery. They travel the miles to reach me. You’re just as I imagined that you would be… A postmarked chance, Could it be – LOVE, Lewis N. Dearest Lewis Night, Wish I could write…for my heart’s fallen through my arms and onto the page. Wish you could read what I mean when I say… Love, Natalie Kate Dear Natalie Kate, Your island is not so far from mine. Georgia to Oregon, I will be back in no time. Angels come shaped as flying machines. Gonna take off with dreams as wings…. Dearest Lewis Night, Wish I could write…for my heart’s fallen through my arms and onto the page. Wish you could read what I mean when I say… Love, Natalie Kate

Take me with you, Lewis, With you YOU ARE MY HEART But I'm frightened by THE IDEA You are my heart But I'm in the mood to be ... To be frightened by moving trains

It's a moon you'd find in nursery rhymes- His performance growing dim Think we'll burn the lamp tonight We will not bother him Clara, where's your book? And the sentence we last read? Clara, children should Lay down their little heads... I'll read to you now There once was a girl who took her father to the park She lost him at the swing sets and it nearly broke her heart So she hired a private detective Found him right where she expected In Madison, Wisconsin - In the bedroom next to hers Clara, won't you look At the moon, his nod good-night? Clara, close your book And your eyes, shut them tight Clara, it's time for bed I'm turning out the lights Angel, sleepyhead... Clara, close your eyes

Be The One 02:52
Come on and be the one I know you are you are you are Your lighting up the night like a star a star a star Like a sparkler in July Like the holiday lights The warmth is coming from you like the sun the sun the sun You know I'm really hoping you're the one the one the one Oh, love I've got my fingers crossed Come on and be the one You know you want to, pretty thing The hands I love to watch, the face that makes me sing Oh, love I've got my fingers crossed So can we be together, you and me and me and you Oh, let it be forever, love me honeydew, I do Oh, love I've got my fingers crossed

Medicine 02:49
Maybe I don't need you like I thought I did Well, there's something in the weather and it's creeping in my skin Well, I am hot and cold by turns My fever's turning bright My heart is filled with blackness I am still chasing light I don't know why you had to go My fever stopped at cold and then you left With all of my medicine No, no doctor in the world could heal me now Maybe I don't need you like I thought I did And all the storied of my girlhood were jus that- good fiction Well, I am hot and cold by turns My fever's burning down I am sad of being tired I'm sick of all this turning around I don't know why you had to go My fever stopped at cold and then you left With all of my medicine No, no doctor in the world could heal me now

If this month is the darkest yet And all we know is caving in The mountains are but sand dunes here And who I was has disappeared I want this to be Neverland I want just to be loved again I want just to be loved by you What do we do now? The sharks are circling What do we do now? Vultures are circling Overhead Hold my hand This will be our darkest trial "Soon be over" on our lips There is not enough of hate To take what we have known away All I knew was love from you All my hope wrapped up in you I want just to be loved by you What do we do now? The sharks are circling What do we do now? Vultures are circling Overhead Hold my hand Hold my hand Say you love me still Say you love me still Say you love me still The world could fall Say you love me still

The Devil 03:36
When the devil comes Like a good angel But with a loose tongue I can't save you now When my heart breaks From all your mistakes The times are changing I can't save you now When all your friends Leave you broken Leave you to your disease I can't save you then I have longed for change Oh, to see you choose Oh, you can't refuse the Savior's hand I have prayed for change Oh, to see you choose Oh, you can't refuse the Savior's hand

Wake up, honey There's a fire in the hall There's an earthquake in the kitchen There are lovers at the door They are leaving little families For a new life and new lust Soon it will be old again The fire turns to dust Oh, God We've got an emergency It's just what I need Wake up, honey 'Cause it all was just a dream The house is fine, the kids, the lawn But what is just beneath? A broken heart, a shadow heart I'll tell you what, you know it's not Just us here underneath Oh, God We've got an emergency It's just what I need It's not all right that I've been sleeping Being fed through an IV While the righteous man is moving 'Cause the fire's at his feet It's not all right I've been avoiding Empty faces around me I know you depress yourselves, Hell, you're depressing me Oh, God We've got an emergency It's just what I need

Oh, where are you? Oh, my sweet love Waited so long And where'd you go when I was down? So I missed you Now it's too late to say What could have been Soft like the sky At the beginning of night Gray like the moon Too sad to cry Pale like the girl who slides into your dreams Sweet like the ghost who's dying to sing Scared like the words we left unsaid Sure it's the same thought in your head Bittersweet like the one who got away So I missed you now it's too late So I missed you now it's too late to say What could have been

All Of Us 03:43
All of us In the mirror Your clear voice Her young voice My sad voice All of us In the background Your clear voice Her young voice My sad voice This old guitar turned me on When I needed a new song It found me, out in the hall: Waiting my turn Waiting to sing for a dozen dreams Waiting to sing for ALL OF US For those who have ears to hear For all of us, the call is clear In the mirror, the background The last sound was the word All of us In the old house Your cotton shirt Her twirling dress My dusty skirt This long road calls me home Oh, where will we settle down> Circle the wagons, husbands and wives! Lift up your voices, children, sing While your mother plucks the strings Lift up your voices, children sing Before God the judgement brings In the mirror, the background, The old house, the last sound.... WAS A RISING Oh, Lord

What's got you worried, pretty baby? I know your moods, How they change like the weather Call me a ship floating by your island I call it like I see it, and you look like an island I'll never take up any kind Of real estate in your heart, will I? What kind of fool am I? You just don't see it - What I see when you're down I want to show you - the story and the sound For love of your eyes, your voice, your spirit I fight through the currents And you bury my secrets I'll never take up any kind Of real estate in your heart, will I? What kind of fool am I?

Prodigal 03:53
I traveled far, far from home Simply to find nothing there for me I took my daddy's money Spent it on what pleased me Everyone loved me They kissed my dancing feet We slept the days and nights we roamed the streets One night we had a feast My friends all looked to me When the bill came, my empty wallet sighed Just like fools, we ran They to another man Me, to the furthest edge of town Here my memory fails In my shame I cried I was bone weary and tired of my life Decided to go home and swallow all my pride Babe, the road back home Seemed nearly twice as long as when I left But still my feet just flew From far off, I saw my dad, My heaven heart it burned But he ran and kissed me Oh, love I don't deserve! "Dad, I'll get to work, and prove that I can earn like any other man." He just laughed and said, "Son, I thought you dead! You don't know my joy to have you home!"

Lord Jesus, Oh, ease us Of Self that oppresses, Annoys and distresses Body and brain With dull pain! Thou never, Since ever, Save one moment only, Wast left, or wast lonely: We are alone, And make moan. Far parted, Dull-hearted, We wander, sleep-walking, Mere shadows, dim-stalking: Orphans we roam, Far from home. Oh new man, Sole human, God's son, and our brother, Give each to the other-- No one left out In cold doubt! High Father, Oh gather Thy sons and thy daughters, Through fires and through waters, Home to the nest Of thy breast! There under The wonder Of great wings of healing, Of love and revealing, Teach us anew To sing true.

Truly I am alone All the world around but I’m alone I am just a voice in a city by the sea If no one hears my song, still I will sing There’s nothing like songs heard in the dark Over the dunes and out across the water I have been looking down miles of coastline We’ve been alone for far too long Love, are you out there under the moon? All the world around and so alone You are just a voice surrounded by the sea Will a song sung from shore bring you close to me? There’s nothing like songs sung in the dark The distance closing as we sing the parts The night has given But light is driven from the east A voice is singing – I recognize it from the dreams I’ve had And you are singing “Land!” While I am singing “Love!” I’d know you anywhere No, we are not alone

Everything I ever knew I forgot when I first saw you Every word flew out of my head Starry eyed and all the rest We were two Jaded souls Love was a gift We took it and ran A season passed A moonlit glow We whispered vows And they echoed The greatest love the world has known Seasons passed But ours grew cold Two made one Broken heart Love was a gift We just didn’t know how to handle it Many moons We came to learn That much of love Is grace unearned Strangers once Now I’ve every line On your face memorized As seasons go on… Two made one Holy life Love is a gift As seasons go on

about

This is a 'best of' of sorts. In chronological order.

Some of my favorite songs from the last sixteen years. I chose these because they still move me. I am a lyrics-first kind of person. I remember writing all of these and thinking while I wrote them that I would always love singing them. And I have.

There's plenty more where these come from...Buy the entire albums!
